The 10,000 member PGCEA has endorsed Aimee Olivo in their first round of endorsements for Board of Education. Aimee is truly honored by this endorsement, saying, "My mom and sister are both teachers. As a child, I spent many hours helping my mom in her classroom. As an adult, I have seen my sister bring grading and other school work home on an almost-nightly basis, including over holiday breaks. Our teachers are the most valuable resource in our school system and I look forward to working with them to ensure that every child in Prince George's County receives an excellent public education."

As she is now officially "Teacher Recommended," Aimee's name will appear on the well-known Apple Ballot at polling places on primary election day, Tuesday, September 14.

Endorsed by The Washington Post

posted Aug 22, 2010 10:02 AM by Abel Olivo

The Washington Post editorial board released their picks for the Prince George's County Board of Education in today's paper and solidly endorsed Aimee Olivo for District 4:
District 4, which includes Cheverly, Glenarden, Bladensburg and Landover Hills, features three newcomers, with the most impressive being school activist Aimee Olivo, 33. It was three years ago, when her son was 1 1/2 , that Ms. Olivo realized she needed to get involved in her local school, and the result was the highly successful Cheverly Advocates for Public Schools. Smart and savvy, Ms. Olivo preaches the importance of community having a sense of ownership over schools, and as a former fundraiser she has ideas about how to go after new resources.

Endorsed by The Gazette

posted Aug 8, 2010 9:14 AM by Abel Olivo   [ updated Aug 8, 2010 9:15 AM ]

After an extensive questionnaire and interview process, the editorial board of The Gazette newspaper released their endorsements for School Board on Thursday, August 5. Aimee Olivo was soundly endorsed as best for District 4:

Aimee Olivo's work at a grassroots level to organize parents and community members to help improve a neighborhood school — which led her to help found the community organization, Cheverly Advocates for Public Schools, where she serves as co-chairwoman — shows she not only recognizes the school system's challenges but also is aggressive about finding solutions.

Olivo, who has extensive fundraising experience from her work at two universities, plans to reach out to businesses and nonprofit organizations for support for schools. She has proved creative in researching best practices to provide quality services at lower costs, such as helping identify an after-school educational program that the school system considered piloting.

Her parent-friendly approach would be critical to improving community ties. Olivo is sure to bring new energy and ideas to District 4.

Challengers Sandy Vaughns and Patricia Eubanks lack a comprehensive understanding of the problems facing the school system and offer no specific plans for improvements.
