Welcome!

Welcome and thank you for taking the time to visit my website to learn more about me, my campaign and the new 4th School Board District.

I am running for Prince George's County Board of Education because I believe that my children, your children, and all our children in Prince George’s County deserve excellent public schools.

You may have noticed from our family photo that neither of our sons is school-aged. In fact, our oldest, Lucas, won't start kindergarten until September 2011. And yet, I have been involved with our local elementary school, Gladys Noon Spellman, since he was only one year old.

That’s because, from almost the first time I took Lucas to the neighborhood playground, all I heard were negative things about Prince George’s County Public Schools. I know many families are opting out of our public schools—sending their children to private schools or moving from the county altogether.

But the thing is, I believe in public schools.

Both my husband and I are products of public schools. And I’m not the kind of person who sits back and complains: I’m the kind of person who works hard for what I believe.

A group of parents and I gathered in a neighbor's home one spring day in 2007 to talk about our local public schools and we asked ourselves two questions. One, Are they really that bad? And, two, if they are, What are we going to do about it? Within a few months, we had formed Cheverly Advocates for Public Schools and have been working since then to engage the local community in the success of our schools and to encourage families to opt in to our schools instead of out of them.

This past winter, when our second son, Nathaniel, was only about eight weeks old, I strapped him in a baby carrier and we attended the Envision Prince George’s Town Hall meeting. That day, 1,000 residents of Prince George’s County engaged in a conversation about what we wanted our county to look like in 20 years. For me, it was personal. I was holding in my arms the future of our county and as I listened and talked, I thought about what I wanted for Nathaniel.

The overwhelming consensus that day was that for our county to achieve its full potential, we must have excellent public schools. And when the thoughts and sentiments of 1,000 people were combined, the message was clear: “if it is to be, it must begin with me.” Over the next few months, as I worked on the Top Notch Schools Community Action Team with about 20 dedicated parents, teachers, grandparents and community members, on a plan for achieving excellence for our schools, I started to think about what my role could be. It was then that I decided to run for school board.

For me, this is personal. I want excellent schools for my children and for your children and for all our children in Prince George’s County. And I will work tirelessly with you to make our vision of excellence a reality.

I ask for your vote for Prince George's County Board of Education on Tuesday, November 2.

Sincerely,
